Spring into action and start growing our own, writes Rachael Fisher
Although it may not exactly feel like it yet,
spring is definitely on its way now. With it comes the excitement of deciding
what to grow in your garden or on your patio this year.
If you are a beginner, with a dream of
tasting a bit of the good life, there are a couple of things to ask yourself.
What do I enjoy eating? It’s helpful to
start with vegetables and herbs you know. What sort of growing space do I have?
Think pots, window boxes, raised beds, or even hanging baskets. What sort of
sun will it get? Most plants need good sunlight.
The final things to think about are your
time and of course budget. Seeds are cost-effective, fun but fiddly. Vegetable
plugs (baby plants) are increasingly popular, they cost a little more, but are
ready to go and with salads you can be eating them within a couple of weeks.
What could be fresher!
So don’t be put off, start small and build
up your confidence. By the end of the summer you’ll be harvesting vegetables
you’ve never even heard of!
