Easy to grow, versatile, distinctive and tasty, the sprout is a much loved classic amongst our vegetables.
Choose a relatively sheltered spot, water well on planting and regularly thereafter. They will grow to 90cm ( 3ft). A support might be needed to keep them growing straight.
Begin picking when the sprouts (buttons) at the base of the stem have reached the size of a walnut and are still tightly closed. Cut them off with a knife and work steadily up the stem at each session. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves in the process. Remember to pick them while they still feel hard.
Sprouts are wonderful in their own right steamed or boiled but with cooked chestnuts and an optional knob of butter are a special treat
