A must for every cook who needs a mild onion flavour! Easy to grow, perennial, popular, needs no fuss, attracts bees and easy to grow! Remember to keep them moist and in full sun. Chives give a wonderful splash of colour in a container which is really pretty .
They will grow to 15 cm ( 8”) and remember, always cut the grassy leaves to within 1” soil level and never, as is often done, at the tips if you want the leaves to continue. If they turn long and lanky with yellowing unhealthy looking leaves it’s a sign you’re not using them often enough! Cut the whole plant down to 2.5 cm ( 1- 2”) above the ground and new growth will come through again.
Use them finely chopped to add to potato salad, soups, salads, stuffed eggs, omelettes, sour cream, cream cheese, garnishes and sauces. Chop them and sprinkle on baked potatoes to give that professional finish!
Remember you can store them as with several other soft leaved herbs with the ice-cube method. Chop and blanch them and pop them into shallow water filled ice cube compartments ready to drop into your dish while cooking.
